Just heard on the news that Syd Barrett, the original guitarist with Pink Floyd has died. In the mid sixties I used to go and watch this weird little phychodelia band at the equally weird UFO club in London, the original Pink Floyd. Then, when I was studying at Cambridge, Syd was often seen shambling along in his post LSD washout. Although Roger was always the main driving force in Floyd, Syd had a great influence on my early Prog Rock tastes. Interestingly my three favourite guitarist of the time Syd, Peter Green and Jimmy Hendrix all over indulged on an industrial scale. At least Peter is back playing superbly again. Colin |

We share the sorrow Colin but at least now maybe Syd has finally left the dark side of the moon. Cheers Kim |

Syd and Pink Floyd-Among the few greats. By the way, they are releasing, today I believe, a PF DVD that includes a rare recorded concert wherein they performed the complete Dark Side album. Syd, R.I.P |

Yes, I remember reading that they didn't call him 'Syd' for nothing (short for Acid...) But didn't he pass a while back? I thought they had written Shine on you Crazy Diamond in memory of him?... |
Wish you were Here was a sort of tribute to Syd from the others after he left, or rather after they left him behind. Spookily when they were recording the Crazy diamond track, having not seen Syd for a long time, he walked into the studio, but no-one recognised him till he slurred, sorry spoke. Colin |
Seeing them early on in London must be an unforgettable memory Colin! Very cool!
It was a great time to be in London, Hesh! The UFO was all phychodelia and acid, all the walls were covered in oil light shows. You could feel on a trip when completely clean! Colin |

Thanks for letting us know, Colin. I hadn't heard. Though it seems we really lost Syd a long time ago, it's good to pause again now, remember him, and be grateful for the musical gifts he gave us when he was burning brightly. I'll give another listen to his recordings while I'm working in the shop. Rest in peace, Mr. Barrett. |

Sorry to hear that Colin. Syd predated my following of Pink Floyd as the first album I heard was Ummagumma. However, you could still say he was somewhat instrumental in their later success as some of the their best known songs were written about him. RIP. |

I wasn't really a fan when I was younger, but my just turned 16 year old daughter loves them, gets their stuff off the net and plays it for me - what would I do without her? Peace, Paul |

The band was always a great influence on me, too. Like most americans really, the first album we really got was Ummagumma, and I had that one when it first came out! After the band was proven popular, they brought the older records over here. I remember seeing the Dark Side tour, when it was a new record and the band first toured with the sax player and the lady singers! It was awesome. Well, Syd has moved on to his Great Gig in the Sky! |

Thats when I first saw them ,when Dark Side of the Moon came out. They played in a mid sized theater and had Quad sound going. They had the laughing track on the song "Brain Damage" (the lunatic is on the grass)going round the quad speakers and had everyone laughing.A great band and Syd Barret will surely be missed! |

Madness and creativity often seem to go hand in hand dont they? SBS TV here in Australia aired a doco about Syd Barrett not long ago. A fascinating story but also a sad story. |

Always liked Pink Floyd. Never did know any individual names. I was a poor fan but a fan nonetheless. |

When I was in college, one of my best friends turned me on to Syd Barrett's solo recordings. We found in them an brilliant imagination and a kind of raw, childlike honesty and vulnerability that was refreshing, inspiring, and very moving. We listened to them a lot while hanging out, talking, and playing backgammon. |
